WALK THE MOON
Biography
WALK THE MOON is an American rock band that originated in Cincinnati, Ohio. The group was formed in 2006 by lead singer and keyboardist Nicholas Petricca. The band's name was inspired by the song "Walking on the Moon" by The Police. The current lineup consists of Nicholas Petricca (vocals, keyboards), Eli Maiman (guitar), and Sean Waugaman (drums).
Career Beginnings and Debut Album
The band independently released their debut album, I Want! I Want!, in 2010. The single "Anna Sun" from this album gained significant airplay on alternative radio stations. In 2012, they signed with RCA Records and released their self-titled major-label debut, Walk the Moon. This album featured a re-recorded version of "Anna Sun," which went on to peak at number 10 on the Billboard Alternative chart.
Breakthrough with "Talking Is Hard"
The band's third studio album, Talking Is Hard, was released in 2014 and became their commercial breakthrough. The lead single, "Shut Up and Dance," was a global smash hit, reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping the Alternative Songs and Hot Adult Contemporary charts. The song was inspired by an experience Petricca had at a Los Angeles nightclub. The album itself peaked at number 14 on the Billboard 200 and is certified platinum by the RIAA.
Subsequent Albums and Musical Style
WALK THE MOON released their fourth album, What If Nothing, in 2017. The lead single, "One Foot," reached number one on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. Their most recent album, HEIGHTS, was released in 2021. The band's sound is often described as indie pop, new wave, and pop-rock, with notable influences from 1980s music, including artists like Talking Heads.
