About SongSense

SongSense.io is a catalogue of song meaning analyses in four languages: English, Russian, Spanish and Portuguese. Each analysis explains what a song is about, how it was made, its imagery and techniques, its emotional tone and its cultural footprint, and answers common questions about it.

The analyses are written by an AI language model, not by music critics. Below is exactly how that works and what you should not expect from these texts.

How analyses are made

  1. Choosing songs. A song enters the queue when a visitor adds a track on the Add a song page (search runs against the Spotify catalogue), when visitors vote for it, when someone orders it with a premium analysis, and automatically — from the search queries people use to find the site and from the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
  2. Track data. Title, artist, album and release date come from Spotify; the music video link comes from Genius.
  3. Research. The first analysis of a song is written by the Claude model (by Anthropic) with web search: it looks up the song's history, reception, chart positions, covers and uses in film and TV. The model is instructed to take verifiable facts — names, dates, chart positions — only from what the search returned, and to leave a section empty rather than guess when nothing is found. If the search finds no material about the song, the analysis is not published.
  4. Interpretation. Meaning, symbolism, style and emotional tone are the model's own interpretation. The model is not given the full lyrics and is not allowed to reproduce them: the lyrics are retold in its own words, with quotes of a line or two at most.
  5. Translation. Versions in other languages are translated by the same model, without new searches, from an existing analysis — preferably the one written in the song's original language.
  6. Publication. Before publication an automatic check only confirms that the analysis is complete (all required sections are present); it does not verify facts. No person proofreads each analysis before it goes live. The analysis page shows its date and the sources the search returned.

Limitations

Machine interpretation can be wrong: the model may misread a metaphor, attribute an intention the author never had, or mix up details of songs with similar titles. Treat an analysis as one possible reading, not as a statement by the artist. Where the artist has explained a song, their own words take precedence.

Reporting an error

If you find a factual error or an interpretation without basis, email with a link to the page. We fix errors, and analyses that turn out to be unfounded or disputed are taken down. Every analysis also has rating buttons and comments.

What else is on the site

  • Voting. You can vote for songs that have no analysis yet; the most-voted songs are analysed automatically.
  • Premium analysis. A paid code (via Stripe) lets you order an analysis of a specific song without waiting for the queue.
  • Comments. Published immediately and moderated after publication — see the site rules.

Technology

The site runs on Laravel (PHP), PostgreSQL and Redis in Docker. Analyses are written by Claude from Anthropic, and payments are handled by Stripe.
