Vic Fuentes
Biography
Victor "Vic" Vincent Fuentes, born on February 10, 1983, in San Diego, California, is an American singer, songwriter, and musician. He is best known as the co-founder, lead vocalist, and rhythm guitarist of the post-hardcore band Pierce the Veil. His father, Victor Gamboa Fuentes, a former jazz musician, and his mother, Vivian K. Fuentes, nurtured his early interest in music. Fuentes began playing the guitar at the age of seven. He attended Mission Bay High School and later enrolled at San Diego State University to study graphic design, but left to pursue his music career.
Career
Vic Fuentes' musical journey began in 1998 when he and his younger brother, Mike Fuentes, formed a punk band called Early Times. After being forced to rename due to a copyright issue, they became Before Today. The band signed with Equal Vision Records and released one album, "A Celebration of an Ending," in 2004 before disbanding in 2006. Following the breakup, Vic and Mike founded Pierce the Veil in 2006. The band has since released several studio albums, including "A Flair for the Dramatic" (2007), "Selfish Machines" (2010), "Collide with the Sky" (2012), "Misadventures" (2016), and "The Jaws of Life" (2023). Fuentes is the primary songwriter for the band, known for lyrics that often draw from personal experiences. Besides his work with Pierce the Veil, Fuentes was also a part of the supergroup Isles & Glaciers.
Musical Style and Songwriting
Fuentes is recognized for his distinctive high-pitched vocals and his ability to blend various genres, including post-hardcore, pop-punk, and experimental rock. His songwriting often explores personal and emotional themes, resonating deeply with the band's fanbase. The song "A Match Into Water" from the album "Collide with the Sky" was written for his former girlfriend who was battling breast cancer. The name of the band itself, "Pierce the Veil," was a concept Fuentes encountered in a sociology class, signifying the act of addressing problems at their root.
