Biography
Tinlicker is a Dutch electronic music duo from Utrecht, composed of Micha Heyboer and Jordi van Achthoven. The duo was formed in 2012, initially as a solo project by Micha Heyboer. Jordi van Achthoven joined in 2014, and together they have become known for their progressive house, deep house, and indietronica sound. Their name, "Tinlicker," is derived from the creative customization of electronic devices to produce new sounds, a practice known as circuit bending.
Career
Before forming Tinlicker, both members had extensive backgrounds in music. Micha Heyboer was a member of the renowned drum and bass trio Black Sun Empire, while Jordi van Achthoven had been producing music under various aliases, including JVA. The duo's collaboration began to gain traction with releases on Feed Me's Sotto Voce label. Their breakthrough came with releases on labels like Anjunadeep, Mau5trap, and Armada. The track "Soon You'll Be Gone," released on Anjunadeep in 2017, was a significant milestone, solidifying their place within the label's roster. Their song "Because You Move Me," created with Helsloot, achieved international success, earning platinum and gold certifications in several countries.
This Is Not Our Universe (2019)
In 2019, Tinlicker released their debut studio album, "This Is Not Our Universe," on Anjunabeats. The album features a blend of deep house, progressive, and trance, with collaborations with artists like alt-J, Run Rivers, and Thomas Oliver. The album was a critical and commercial success, reaching number one on dance album charts in multiple countries. It includes notable tracks such as their remix of alt-J's "Breezeblocks" and the single "Lost" featuring Run Rivers.
In Another Lifetime (2022)
The duo's second album, "In Another Lifetime," was released in February 2022 on Anjunadeep. Written during the lockdown period, the album reflects the personal and artistic growth of the duo. It features collaborations with vocalists like Nathan Nicholson of The Boxer Rebellion, Jamie Irrepressible, and Hero Baldwin. The album explores a range of styles from progressive house to electronica and melodic techno.
Cold Enough for Snow (2024)
In early 2024, Tinlicker released their third studio album, "Cold Enough for Snow," marking their debut on the [PIAS] Électronique label. This album features collaborations with artists such as Brian Molko from Placebo, Tom Smith from Editors, and Circa Waves.
Musical Style
Tinlicker's music is characterized by its fusion of emotive songwriting with advanced sound design. Their sound often incorporates elements of progressive house, melodic techno, and trance, creating a sound that is both suitable for the dancefloor and emotionally resonant. Live Performances
Tinlicker has a significant global presence, performing at major festivals such as Coachella, Creamfields, Tomorrowland, and Ultra. They also host their own club night, "Remember The Future," in their hometown of Utrecht. In 2023, they embarked on a live tour, further cementing their reputation as a dynamic live act.
