Surf Curse
Biography
Surf Curse is an American indie rock band formed in Reno, Nevada, in 2012. The project was initially a duo consisting of Nick Rattigan (vocals, drums) and Jacob Rubeck (guitars). The band is now based in Los Angeles and includes members Noah Kholl (guitars) and Henry Dillon (bass). Their sound is often described as a blend of indie surf, surf punk, indie rock, and garage rock.
History
Nick Rattigan and Jacob Rubeck started the band in 2012 under different names before settling on Surf Curse. They relocated to Los Angeles, where they became part of the local all-ages punk scene, frequently playing at the club The Smell. In 2013, the band released their debut album, "Buds," which featured the song "Freaks." This was followed by the "Sad Boys" EP later that year.
Their second album, "Nothing Yet," was released in 2017 through Danger Collective Records. The band's third album, "Heaven Surrounds You," was released in 2019 and was inspired by the members' favorite cult films. A significant turning point in their career came in 2020 when their 2013 song "Freaks" went viral on TikTok, leading to mainstream success and a record deal with Atlantic Records. Following this, the band expanded to a four-piece with the addition of Noah Kholl and Henry Dillon. Their fourth album and major-label debut, "Magic Hour," was released in 2022.
Musical Style and Influences
Surf Curse's music is characterized by its gritty, melodic sound, combining elements of surf rock and punk. The band's influences are diverse, with members citing artists like Blink-182, The Strokes, My Bloody Valentine, and Solange as inspirations. Their songwriting often explores themes of heartbreak and disillusionment, with a notable influence from movies.
