History
Formation and Early Years (1999-2003)
Bassist Joe Principe and guitarist Dan Wleklinski, both formerly of the band 88 Fingers Louie, formed Rise Against in 1999 under the name Transistor Revolt. The initial lineup included vocalist Tim McIlrath, drummer Tony Tintari, and guitarist Kevin White. After releasing a self-produced demo, they signed with Fat Wreck Chords. Before the release of their debut album, the band changed their name to Rise Against. Their first two albums, "The Unraveling" (2001) and "Revolutions per Minute" (2003), were released on this label and gained them underground success. Todd Mohney replaced Dan Wleklinski on guitar for "Revolutions per Minute".
Mainstream Success (2004-2010)
In 2003, Rise Against signed with Dreamworks Records, which was soon absorbed by Geffen Records. Their major-label debut, "Siren Song of the Counter Culture" (2004), brought them mainstream attention with the singles "Give It All" and "Swing Life Away". The album was their first to chart on the Billboard 200. Chris Chasse replaced Todd Mohney on guitar for this album. Their next album, "The Sufferer & the Witness" (2006), peaked at number ten on the Billboard 200 and was their first to chart internationally. It featured the successful singles "Ready to Fall," "Prayer of the Refugee," and "The Good Left Undone." Zach Blair replaced Chris Chasse in 2007. The 2008 album "Appeal to Reason" saw the band's sound become more accessible, which led to even greater success. The single "Savior" from this album holds the record for the most consecutive weeks on the Hot Rock Songs and Modern Rock Tracks charts.
Continued Success and Recent Years (2011-Present)
Rise Against's popularity continued with "Endgame" (2011), which reached number two on the Billboard 200. This was followed by "The Black Market" (2014) and "Wolves" (2017), both of which also charted in the top ten. Their ninth studio album, "Nowhere Generation," was released in 2021 and tackles issues of generational disillusionment and economic disparity. The band is set to release their tenth album, "Ricochet," in 2025.
