Biography
Geoffrey Royce Rojas, known professionally as Prince Royce, was born on May 11, 1989, in The Bronx, New York. He is an American singer, songwriter, and actor of Dominican descent. Raised in a housing project, his father was a taxi driver and his mother worked at a beauty salon. From a young age, Royce showed an interest in music, participating in elementary school choir and competing in talent shows. At thirteen, he began writing poetry which evolved into songwriting.
Career Beginnings
At the age of nineteen, Royce met his future manager, Andrés Hidalgo. Hidalgo introduced him to producer Sergio George, who signed Royce to his record label, Top Stop Music, after hearing his demos. In March 2010, he released his self-titled debut album. The album featured two hit singles, a bachata cover of "Stand by Me" and "Corazón Sin Cara." Both songs reached number one on the Billboard Tropical Songs chart, and the album topped the US Billboard Top Latin Albums and Tropical Albums charts. This initial success earned him three Billboard Latin Music Awards in 2011, including Tropical Album of the Year.
Rise to Fame
Prince Royce's second album, "Phase II," was released in April 2012 and also hit number one on the US Latin and Tropical album charts. His third album, "Soy el Mismo" (2013), included the hit single "Darte un Beso" and earned him a Latin Grammy nomination. In 2015, he released his first primarily English-language album, "Double Vision," which featured collaborations with artists like Snoop Dogg, Jennifer Lopez, and Pitbull. His subsequent albums, "Five" (2017) and "Alter Ego" (2020), continued to perform well on the charts. Throughout his career, he has won over 80 awards, including 22 Latin Billboard Awards, and has received 12 Latin Grammy nominations.
Musical Style and Other Ventures
Prince Royce is primarily known for his urban bachata sound, blending the traditional Dominican genre with R&B, pop, and other contemporary styles. His music often features romantic and smooth melodies. In addition to his music career, Royce has ventured into acting, appearing in the Hulu series "East Los High" and the Fox Live musical "The Passion." He is also involved in philanthropic work, supporting organizations focused on education and health.
Personal Life
Prince Royce married actress Emeraude Toubia in 2018. The couple announced their divorce in March 2022. He is known for being a role model for the youth in his hometown, and August 9th was proclaimed "Prince Royce Day" in New York City in 2018.
