Biography
Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija, known professionally as Peso Pluma, is a Mexican singer and songwriter. He was born on June 15, 1999, in Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico. Growing up in Guadalajara, he began teaching himself to play the guitar at age 15 by watching videos on YouTube. His parents are of Mexican heritage, with his father having Lebanese and Palestinian ancestry and his mother's family from Sinaloa.
Career Beginnings
Peso Pluma's professional music career began in 2020. He initially released two live albums, "Disco en Vivo" and "Disco en Vivo, Vol. 2," in collaboration with his cousin, Roberto "Tito" Laija Garcia. His debut studio album, "Ah y Qué?", was also released in 2020, followed by his second album, "Efectos Secundarios," in 2021.
Rise to Fame
His breakthrough came in 2022 with the single "El Belicón," a collaboration with Raul Vega, which went viral on social media platforms like TikTok. This success was followed by the hit "Siempre Pendientes" with Luis R. Conriquez. His collaborations with Natanael Cano, "AMG" and "PRC," further boosted his popularity, with both songs charting on the Billboard Hot 100. In April 2023, his collaboration with Eslabon Armado, "Ella Baila Sola," made history as the first regional Mexican song to reach the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number four. He also became the first regional Mexican artist to perform on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon."
Musical Style
Peso Pluma is known for his distinct musical style, which is primarily corridos tumbados, a genre that blends traditional Sinaloa-style corridos with elements of Latin urban music, including hip hop and reggaeton. He is considered a key figure in the revitalization of the corrido genre. His musical influences include Ariel Camacho and Valentín Elizalde.
Major Achievements
His third studio album, "Génesis," released in 2023, won the Grammy Award for Best Música Mexicana Album. The album peaked at number 3 on the Billboard 200 chart, the highest-charting regional Mexican album in history. His fourth studio album, "Éxodo," was released in 2024. He has won numerous awards, including multiple iHeartRadio Music Awards and BMI Latin Awards. Peso Pluma is also the founder of his own record label, Double P Records.
