Peggy Gou
Biography
Peggy Gou, born Kim Min-ji on July 3, 1991, in Incheon, South Korea, is a Berlin-based DJ, producer, singer, and songwriter. At the age of 14, she moved to London to study English and later attended the London College of Fashion. After graduating, she briefly worked as a correspondent editor for Harper's Bazaar Korea before relocating to Berlin to pursue her music career full-time.
Music Career
Gou began DJing in 2009 and started producing her own tracks in 2013 using Ableton Live. She released her debut EP, "Art of War Part 1," in 2016 on Radio Slave's Rekids label. That same year, she released a total of four EPs, quickly gaining recognition in the electronic music scene. A significant milestone was becoming the first Korean female DJ to play at Berlin's iconic nightclub, Berghain.
Rise to Fame
Gou's international profile grew with extensive touring and festival appearances at major events like Coachella, Glastonbury, and Primavera Sound. Her 2018 track, "It Makes You Forget (Itgehane)," which featured her own vocals in Korean for the first time, won Best Track at the AIM Independent Music Awards. In 2023, she achieved massive mainstream success with the single "(It Goes Like) Nanana," which became a global hit, charting in numerous countries and marking her debut on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was the lead single from her debut album, "I Hear You," released in June 2024 via XL Recordings.
Record Label and Other Ventures
In 2019, Peggy Gou launched her own independent record label, Gudu Records, to support emerging artists. The name "Gudu" translates to "shoes" in Korean, a nod to her fans. She also released a DJ-Kicks compilation the same year, which was her first release to appear on a Billboard chart. Alongside her music career, Gou ventured into fashion, launching her streetwear brand Kirin ("giraffe" in Korean) in 2019, with support from the late Virgil Abloh.
