Biography
Olivia Isabel Rodrigo, born on February 20, 2003, in Murrieta, California, is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. Of Filipino-American heritage on her father's side and German-Irish on her mother's, she began vocal and acting lessons at a young age. By age 9, she was taking piano lessons and started writing songs around the same time, inspired by country music.
Acting Career
Rodrigo's on-screen career began with an Old Navy commercial. In 2015, she landed her first major role as Grace Thomas in the direct-to-video film "An American Girl: Grace Stirs Up Success". This was followed by her role as Paige Olvera in the Disney Channel series "Bizaardvark," which aired from 2016 to 2019. Her breakthrough acting role came in 2019 when she was cast as Nini Salazar-Roberts in the Disney+ series "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series". For the show's soundtrack, she wrote and performed the song "All I Want," which charted on the Billboard Hot 100.
Music Career
2021: The "SOUR" Phenomenon
In 2020, Olivia Rodrigo signed with Geffen Records. She released her debut single, "drivers license," in January 2021, which she co-wrote with producer Dan Nigro. The song was a global phenomenon, breaking Spotify records for the most daily streams for a non-holiday song and debuting at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Her debut studio album, "SOUR," was released in May 2021. The album, a mix of pop, alternative pop, and pop-rock, explores themes of adolescence and heartbreak. It produced two more hit singles, "deja vu" and the number-one hit "good 4 u". "SOUR" was a massive commercial success, breaking the Spotify record for the biggest opening week for an album by a female artist and topping charts worldwide. At the 64th Annual Grammy Awards, Rodrigo won three awards: Best New Artist, Best Pop Vocal Album for "SOUR," and Best Pop Solo Performance for "drivers license".
2023: "GUTS" and Continued Success
Rodrigo released her second album, "GUTS," on September 8, 2023. She described the album as being about "growing pains" and the process of self-discovery during her late teenage years. The lead single, "vampire," debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, making her the youngest artist to have three number-one debut singles on the chart. The album also features the singles "bad idea right?" and "get him back!". A deluxe version, "Guts (Spilled)," was released in March 2024. To support the album, she embarked on the Guts World Tour, her first arena tour, in 2024.
