Biography

Mobb Deep was an American hip hop duo from Queens, New York, that consisted of rappers Havoc (Kejuan Muchita) and Prodigy (Albert Johnson). The duo were pioneers of hardcore East Coast hip hop and are considered one of the most influential rap groups of all time. Havoc and Prodigy met at the High School of Art and Design in Manhattan. Initially known as the Poetical Prophets, they later changed their name to Mobb Deep.

Rise to Fame

Mobb Deep's debut album, "Juvenile Hell," was released in 1993 but it was their sophomore album, "The Infamous," released in 1995, that catapulted them to mainstream success. This album is widely regarded as a classic in the hardcore hip hop genre, featuring the iconic singles "Shook Ones (Part II)" and "Survival of the Fittest". Their subsequent album, "Hell on Earth" (1996), debuted at number six on the Billboard 200 chart and further solidified their place in the hip hop landscape. The album featured collaborations with prominent East Coast rappers like Nas, Method Man, and Raekwon.

Musical Style and Impact

Mobb Deep's music was characterized by its dark, gritty, and raw depiction of street life in the Queensbridge Houses, where Havoc grew up. Havoc's production, known for its haunting and atmospheric beats, combined with Prodigy's distinctive lyrical delivery and vivid storytelling, created a unique and influential sound. They are credited with popularizing the "Dunn language," a slang that became part of the hip hop lexicon. Their work has influenced a generation of artists and continues to resonate with listeners.

Later Career and Prodigy's Death

In 2005, Mobb Deep signed with G-Unit Records, a label founded by fellow Queens rapper 50 Cent, and released the album "Blood Money" in 2006. The duo briefly disbanded in 2012 but reunited the following year. On June 20, 2017, Prodigy passed away at the age of 42. He had been hospitalized for complications related to his lifelong battle with sickle cell anemia. The official cause of death was later confirmed as accidental choking.
