Biography

Maná is a Mexican pop-rock band from Guadalajara, Jalisco. The group's origins trace back to the mid-1970s with a band called Sombrero Verde, which would later evolve into Maná. After some lineup changes, the band officially formed as Maná in 1986, a name chosen for its Polynesian meaning of "positive energy." The current lineup consists of Fher Olvera (lead vocals, guitar), Alex González (drums), Sergio Vallín (guitar), and Juan Calleros (bass).

Early Career and Breakthrough

The band initially started as "Green Hat Spies" and later changed their name to "Sombrero Verde". After struggling to gain traction, they reformed as Maná and signed with Polygram Records in 1987, releasing a self-titled album. However, it was their 1992 album, ¿Dónde Jugarán Los Niños?, that catapulted them to international stardom. This album sold over 10 million copies worldwide, becoming the best-selling Spanish-language rock album of all time and featuring hit singles like "Oye Mi Amor" and "Vivir Sin Aire".

Musical Style and Influences

Maná's sound is a fusion of pop rock, Latin pop, calypso, reggae, and ska. Their musical influences are diverse, including rock bands like Led Zeppelin and The Police, as well as Spanish pop artists and reggae icon Bob Marley.

Commercial Success and Acclaim

Throughout their career, Maná has sold over 45 million records worldwide. They have earned numerous accolades, including four Grammy Awards, eight Latin Grammy Awards, and 19 Billboard Latin Music Awards. In 2016, Maná became the first Spanish-language rock band to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. They were also honored as the Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year in 2018. In 2025, they were nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the first time.

Activism and Philanthropy

Beyond their music, Maná is known for its social and political activism. In 1995, they established the Selva Negra Foundation (Fundación Ecológica Selva Negra) to finance and support environmental protection projects. The foundation has been involved in efforts to save sea turtles and promote reforestation. The band has also been a vocal advocate for human rights and has supported various charitable causes. They have used their platform to address issues such as immigrant rights and have partnered with organizations like Border Angels.
