Biography
Sir Robert Bryson Hall II, known professionally as Logic, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer born on January 22, 1990, in Rockville, Maryland. He spent much of his youth in Gaithersburg, Maryland, in a troubled home environment, with parents who struggled with addiction. Logic has seven half-siblings. He left home at 17, taking on two jobs to support his burgeoning music career. His interest in hip hop was sparked as a teenager.
Career Beginnings and Mixtapes
Logic initially went by the name "Psychological" and released an unofficial mixtape under this moniker. In 2010, he shortened his name to Logic and released his first official mixtape, "Young, Broke & Infamous". This project caught the attention of the independent label Visionary Music Group, which he subsequently signed with. He gained significant popularity with his "Young Sinatra" mixtape series. The third installment, "Young Sinatra: Welcome to Forever" (2013), received critical acclaim and led to a record deal with Def Jam Recordings.
Studio Albums and Commercial Success
Logic's debut studio album, "Under Pressure" (2014), debuted at number four on the U.S. Billboard 200 and was certified gold. His sophomore album, "The Incredible True Story" (2015), also performed well, reaching the top five on the Billboard 200 and achieving gold certification. In 2017, Logic achieved his first number-one album with "Everybody". This album featured the hit single "1-800-273-8255," which peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and brought mainstream attention to the topic of suicide prevention. His subsequent albums, including "YSIV" (2018), "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" (2019), and "No Pressure" (2020), continued his commercial success, with the latter two also debuting at number one.
Musical Style and Influences
Logic's musical style is often characterized by its introspective and philosophical themes, addressing topics like mental health, identity, and racism. He is known for his rapid-fire flow and lyrical prowess, drawing inspiration from artists like Nas, Wu-Tang Clan, and Frank Sinatra. His production often incorporates elements of jazz-rap and boom-bap, influenced by producers like Kanye West, RZA, and Nujabes. Over his career, he has shown versatility, experimenting with trap influences in projects like the "Bobby Tarantino" mixtape series.
Retirement and Return
In July 2020, Logic announced his retirement from music following the release of his album "No Pressure," stating a desire to focus on fatherhood. During his retirement, he signed an exclusive streaming deal with Twitch. However, he returned to music the following year with the mixtape "Bobby Tarantino III" (2021) and the album "Vinyl Days" (2022), which was his final album with Def Jam Recordings. He has since released music independently, including the albums "College Park" (2023) and "Ultra 85" (2024).
Other Ventures
Beyond music, Logic is a published author. His debut novel, "Supermarket" (2019), became a New York Times Best Seller and was accompanied by a soundtrack album. He also released a memoir titled "This Bright Future" in 2021. Logic has also ventured into acting and filmmaking.
Personal Life
Logic was married to singer Jessica Andrea from 2015 to 2018. In 2019, he married Brittney Noell. The couple has two sons, Bobby and Leo. Logic has been open about his past struggles with cigarette addiction, which he detailed in the song "Nikki" from his debut album. He also maintains a YouTube channel where he shares content about video games and his personal life.
