Biography

Durk Derrick Banks, known professionally as Lil Durk, was born on October 19, 1992, in the Englewood neighborhood on Chicago's South Side. Growing up with his father incarcerated since he was seven months old, Durk faced significant responsibility and hardship from a young age, including food scarcity. He developed an interest in rap and began building a following on social media platforms like Myspace and YouTube. At 17, he became a father, a life-altering event that motivated him to pursue a music career more seriously after dropping out of high school.

Career Beginnings and Rise to Fame

In the early 2010s, Lil Durk emerged as a key figure in the Chicago drill music scene. He gained local recognition with his early singles "Sneak Dissin'" and "I'ma Hitta". His career gained significant momentum with the release of his "Signed to the Streets" mixtape series in 2013 and 2014, which led to a record deal with Def Jam Recordings. In 2010, he founded his own record label and collective, Only the Family (OTF). His debut studio album, "Remember My Name," was released in 2015, followed by "Lil Durk 2X" in 2016.

Mainstream Success and Notable Projects

After parting ways with Def Jam in 2018, Lil Durk signed with Alamo Records. His commercial breakthrough came in 2020 with the single "Viral Moment," his first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 as a lead artist. This was followed by a string of successful singles, including "3 Headed Goat" featuring Polo G and Lil Baby, and a high-profile feature on Drake's "Laugh Now Cry Later," which peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. His 2020 album, "The Voice," and his 2021 collaborative album with Lil Baby, "The Voice of the Heroes," both achieved high chart positions, with the latter becoming his first number-one album on the Billboard 200. His 2022 album, "7220," also debuted at number one. In 2023, he released "Almost Healed," which featured the Grammy-winning single "All My Life" with J. Cole.

Only the Family (OTF)

Lil Durk founded the collective and record label Only the Family (OTF) in 2010. The label has been a platform for Chicago artists, including the late King Von. OTF has released several compilation albums, such as "Only the Family Involved, Vol. 1" and "Loyal Bros".

Personal Life

Lil Durk is a Muslim and a father to seven children. He married his longtime partner, India Royale, in 2024. His life and music have been profoundly impacted by violence and loss. His cousin, OTF Nunu, was killed in 2014, and his manager, Uchenna "OTF Chino Dolla" Agina, was killed in 2015. He has also experienced the loss of his close friend and OTF artist King Von in 2020 and his brother Dontay "DThang" Banks Jr. in 2021. These experiences are often reflected in his introspective and raw lyrical style.
