La Roux
Biography
La Roux is the English synth-pop project of singer and songwriter Elly Jackson. Originally a duo, Jackson was joined by record producer Ben Langmaid in 2006 after being introduced by a mutual friend. Their initial work under the name Automan consisted of largely acoustic music. They later shifted to a synth-pop sound, influenced by 1980s artists like Eurythmics, Depeche Mode, and Prince, and renamed the project La Roux.
Breakthrough and Debut Album
La Roux's debut single, "Quicksand," was released in December 2008. This was followed by "In for the Kill" and the chart-topping single "Bulletproof," which reached number one in the UK. Their self-titled debut album, released in 2009, was a critical and commercial success. It reached number two on the UK Albums Chart and won a Grammy Award for Best Electronic/Dance Album in 2011. The album was nominated for the Mercury Prize and achieved platinum status in the UK and Ireland.
Musical Style and Influences
La Roux's sound is characterized by sharp-edged songwriting, crystalline vocals, and a style that reimagines the sounds of the 1980s. Jackson's early influences included folk artists like Joni Mitchell before she became involved in the rave scene. Her androgynous style and distinctive reddish hair also became a signature part of the act's image.
Transition to Solo Project
In 2012, Ben Langmaid left the group, and Elly Jackson continued to use the La Roux name as her stage persona. Her first solo album as La Roux, "Trouble in Paradise," was released in 2014. While critically well-received, it did not achieve the same commercial success as the debut. Following the album's release, La Roux parted ways with Polydor Records.
Independent Releases and Recent Work
Jackson launched her own independent label, Supercolour Records, to release her third album, "Supervision," in 2020. This album was recorded entirely as a solo act. Throughout her career, Jackson has collaborated with other artists, including providing vocals for Kanye West, Tyler, the Creator, and New Order. As of early 2025, La Roux has been performing in the U.S. and is reportedly working on a new album with American production influences. A performance at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is scheduled for July 2025.
