Biography

John Paul Cooper, born November 1, 1983, in Middleton, Greater Manchester, is an English singer and songwriter known professionally as JP Cooper. His musical journey began with a foundation in the indie rock scene before he transitioned to soul and gospel, influenced by artists like Donny Hathaway. Cooper is a self-taught musician who honed his craft playing guitar and performing at open mic nights throughout Manchester.

Career Beginnings

In his early years, Cooper was part of a rock band called Azure Glow. He later embarked on a solo career, releasing his first two EPs, EP1 and EP2, independently in 2012. He continued to self-release music and build a fanbase through touring. In 2014, he signed with Island Records, releasing his first EP with the label, Keep the Quiet Out, that same year, which showcased a move towards a more electronic sound.

Breakthrough and Collaborations

Cooper's international breakthrough came in 2016 when he was featured on the Jonas Blue single "Perfect Strangers". The song was a commercial success, peaking at number two on the UK Singles Chart and charting in multiple countries. This collaboration significantly raised his profile. Over the years, he has collaborated with a diverse range of artists, including Stormzy, Craig David, Gabrielle Aplin, and Stefflon Don.

JP Cooper released his debut studio album, Raised Under Grey Skies, on October 6, 2017. The album was a success, reaching number nine on the UK Albums Chart. It featured several singles, most notably "September Song," which became a major hit, charting at number seven in the UK. Other singles from the album include "Passport Home," "She's on My Mind," and "Wait".
