James Bay
Biography
James Michael Bay, born on September 4, 1990, is an English singer-songwriter and guitarist from Hitchin, Hertfordshire. His passion for music ignited at age 11, inspired by Eric Clapton's "Layla," which led him to pick up a guitar he found in a cupboard. At 18, he moved to Brighton to study at the British and Irish Modern Music Institute, where he frequently performed at open mic nights, honing his craft. A fan-uploaded YouTube video of one of his London performances caught the attention of a Republic Records A&R executive, and he was signed to the label within a week.
Career Beginnings and Breakthrough
Bay released his debut EP, "The Dark of the Morning," in 2013, followed by the "Let It Go" EP in May 2014. The single "Let It Go" became a Top 10 hit in the UK. His big break came with the single "Hold Back the River" in late 2014, which achieved platinum certification. This success set the stage for his debut studio album, "Chaos and the Calm," released in March 2015. Recorded in Nashville with producer Jacquire King, the album soared to number one in the UK and number 15 in the US. The album earned him three Grammy Award nominations in 2016 for Best New Artist, Best Rock Album, and Best Rock Song for "Hold Back the River." He also won the Brit Award for "Critics' Choice" in 2015 and Best British Male Solo Artist in 2016.
