Biography
Jermaine Lamarr Cole, born on January 28, 1985, is a highly acclaimed American rapper, songwriter, and record producer. He was born on an American military base in Frankfurt, West Germany, to an African American father who served in the U.S. Army and a white American mother who was a postal worker. At eight months old, following his parents' separation, his mother moved with him and his older brother Zach to Fayetteville, North Carolina. Cole's passion for music ignited at a young age; he began rapping at 12 and started producing his own beats after his mother gifted him a beat machine. After graduating from Terry Sanford High School in 2003, he moved to New York City to pursue his music career while attending St. John's University on an academic scholarship. He graduated magna cum laude in 2007 with a degree in communications.
Musical Career
J. Cole initially gained recognition with his debut mixtape, "The Come Up," released in 2007. His follow-up mixtapes, "The Warm Up" (2009) and "Friday Night Lights" (2010), further solidified his reputation and garnered a significant following. A pivotal moment in his career came in 2009 when he became the first artist signed to Jay-Z's record label, Roc Nation. His debut studio album, "Cole World: The Sideline Story" (2011), debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. All of his subsequent studio albums, including "Born Sinner" (2013), "2014 Forest Hills Drive" (2014), "4 Your Eyez Only" (2016), "KOD" (2018), and "The Off-Season" (2021), have also reached the top spot on the Billboard 200. Notable Achievements
J. Cole is a two-time Grammy Award winner. He won his first Grammy in 2020 for Best Rap Song for "A Lot" with 21 Savage. His second came for Best Melodic Rap Performance for "All My Life" with Lil Durk. He has also won a Billboard Music Award for Top Rap Album and multiple BET Hip Hop Awards. His 2014 album, "2014 Forest Hills Drive," was certified platinum with no guest features, a rare achievement in hip-hop. All of his studio albums have been certified platinum by the RIAA.
Dreamville Records
In 2007, J. Cole and his St. John's University classmate Ibrahim Hamad founded the record label Dreamville Records. The label serves as a platform for Cole's own music and for a roster of other artists, including Bas, JID, Ari Lennox, and EarthGang. Dreamville has released several compilation albums, with "Revenge of the Dreamers III" (2019) debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 and earning a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album.
Personal Life and Philanthropy
J. Cole is married to Melissa Heholt, and they have two children. He is known for being private about his personal life. In 2015, he established The Dreamville Foundation, a non-profit organization aimed at supporting the youth of his hometown, Fayetteville. One of the foundation's notable initiatives involves using his childhood home as rent-free housing for single mothers.
