Biography

Florence + The Machine is an English indie rock band formed in London in 2007, fronted by the charismatic lead singer Florence Welch. The "Machine" is her backing band, which includes a rotating cast of musicians, with Isabella "Machine" Summers (keyboards) being a core and founding member. The name originated from a private joke between Welch and Summers, initially calling themselves Florence Robot/Isa Machine.

Formation and Early Years

Florence Leontine Mary Welch was born in London on August 28, 1986, to a family with strong literary and academic roots. Her mother is a professor of Renaissance studies, and her father is an advertising executive with a background in music. This environment influenced her artistic and lyrical style. After attending Camberwell College of Arts, Welch's musical career gained momentum. A pivotal moment came in December 2006 when she drunkenly sang an Etta James song to DJ and promoter Mairead Nash in a nightclub bathroom, who then became her manager. Welch and Isabella Summers officially formed Florence + The Machine in 2007.

Breakthrough with "Lungs"

The band's rise to prominence was significantly aided by promotion from the BBC. They gained early critical acclaim and won the "Critics' Choice" award at the 2009 Brit Awards. Their debut album, "Lungs," was released on July 3, 2009. It was a huge commercial success, reaching the number one spot on the UK Albums Chart in January 2010 after spending 28 consecutive weeks on the chart. The album featured hit singles like "Dog Days Are Over" and a cover of "You've Got the Love". "Lungs" won the Brit Award for Best British Album in 2010.

Subsequent Albums and Musical Style

Their second album, "Ceremonials," released in October 2011, debuted at number one in the UK and number six in the US, showcasing a grander, more orchestral sound with darker themes. The third album, "How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful" (2015), became their first to top the charts in the US. Later albums include "High as Hope" (2018) and "Dance Fever" (2022). The band's musical style is a fusion of various genres, including indie rock, baroque pop, art pop, and soul. Welch's powerful vocals and poetic lyrics, often dealing with themes of love, death, pain, and mythology, are central to their sound.

The Band

While Florence Welch is the undisputed focal point, the "Machine" provides the rich musical landscape. Key long-term members have included Robert Ackroyd (guitar), Tom Monger (harp), and Christopher Lloyd Hayden (drums). The lineup has evolved over the years, but the collaborative spirit remains.
