Father John Misty

Biography

Joshua Michael Tillman, known professionally as Father John Misty, is an American singer, songwriter, and musician. Born in Rockville, Maryland, he grew up in a strict evangelical Christian household where secular music was often forbidden. He learned to play drums and guitar at a young age. After a brief time in college, Tillman moved to Seattle in his early twenties to pursue a music career.

Early Career and Fleet Foxes

In Seattle, Tillman began recording and performing under the name J. Tillman. His early work was characterized by a solemn, acoustic folk sound. He caught the attention of musician Damien Jurado, who took him on tour. From 2004 to 2010, he released a series of solo albums. In 2008, Tillman joined the successful indie folk band Fleet Foxes as their drummer, a role he held for four years and which brought him significantly more exposure. He played on their critically acclaimed second album, "Helplessness Blues" (2011).

The Birth of Father John Misty

Fear Fun (2012)

In 2012, Tillman left Fleet Foxes to reinvent himself as a solo artist under the new moniker Father John Misty. This marked a radical departure from his previous work. His debut album as Father John Misty, "Fear Fun," released in 2012, showcased a more indie-rock sound with satirical and witty lyrics, often inspired by his experiences in Hollywood.

I Love You, Honeybear (2015)

His second album, "I Love You, Honeybear" (2015), was a major critical and commercial success. It is a concept album about his relationship with his wife, Emma. The album is known for its brutally honest, cynical, yet ultimately romantic exploration of love and intimacy, set against lush, orchestral arrangements.

Later Albums

Pure Comedy (2017)

Tillman's third album, "Pure Comedy" (2017), saw him turn his satirical gaze outward, offering a sprawling and often scathing critique of society, politics, consumerism, and the human condition. The album is noted for its complex lyrical themes and ambitious musical arrangements.

God's Favorite Customer (2018)

In contrast to the grand scope of its predecessor, "God's Favorite Customer" (2018) was a more personal and raw album. Written during a turbulent two-month period in his life, the songs deal with themes of heartbreak and personal crisis.

Chloë and the Next 20th Century (2022)

His fifth album, "Chloë and the Next 20th Century," was released in 2022. This album marked another stylistic shift, delving into the sounds of old Hollywood, big band jazz, and traditional pop. The album was written and recorded in late 2020 and features arrangements by Drew Erickson.

Mahashmashana (2024)

Father John Misty's upcoming sixth studio album, "Mahashmashana," is set to be released in November 2024. The title is a Sanskrit word meaning "great cremation ground." The album continues his collaboration with producer Drew Erickson.
