Biography
Sir Elton Hercules John, born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on March 25, 1947, is a highly acclaimed British singer, songwriter, and pianist. He is recognized as one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold over 300 million records worldwide. His long-standing collaboration with lyricist Bernie Taupin is one of the most successful in history. John's unique blend of pop and rock styles has made him a major international star.
Early Life and Career
Born in Pinner, Middlesex, England, John taught himself to play piano at the age of four. He won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music at age 11 and attended for five years. In the mid-1960s, he joined the band Bluesology and later adopted his stage name from two of its members. In 1967, he responded to an ad for a songwriter and began his partnership with Bernie Taupin. His second album, "Elton John" (1970), featured his first major hit, "Your Song," which brought him international fame.
Rise to Superstardom
The 1970s were John's most commercially successful decade, with a string of chart-topping albums including "Honky Château" (1972), "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" (1973), and "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy" (1975). He achieved seven #1 albums in the U.S. between 1972 and 1975. His flamboyant stage presence, characterized by extravagant costumes and glasses, became as famous as his music. Later Career and Achievements
Throughout the 1980s and beyond, John continued to release successful albums and singles, including "I'm Still Standing" and "Sacrifice". In 1994, he collaborated with Tim Rice on the music for Disney's "The Lion King," for which he won an Academy Award for "Can You Feel the Love Tonight". A rewritten version of his song "Candle in the Wind" released in 1997 as a tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales, became the best-selling single in chart history. John has received numerous accolades throughout his career, including five Grammy Awards, a Tony Award, and he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1998 for his services to music and charity. In 2024, he achieved EGOT status, having won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award.
Personal Life and Activism
John came out as gay in 1988. He has been in a relationship with David Furnish since 1993, and they were among the first couples to form a civil partnership in the UK in 2005. They married in 2014 and have two sons. In 1992, he established the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which has raised hundreds of millions for HIV/AIDS programs. He has been a prominent advocate for LGBTQ+ rights throughout his career.
