Biography

DNCE is an American dance-rock band that was formed in 2015. The final lineup consists of lead singer Joe Jonas, drummer Jack Lawless, and guitarist JinJoo Lee. Bassist and keyboardist Cole Whittle was a member from the band's inception until their hiatus in 2018. The band's music is a blend of dance-rock, dance-pop, pop rock, and funk-pop.

Formation and "Swaay" EP

The concept for DNCE originated between Joe Jonas, formerly of the Jonas Brothers, and drummer Jack Lawless, who had toured with the Jonas Brothers. They were later joined by guitarist JinJoo Lee, who had also toured with artists like CeeLo Green, and bassist Cole Whittle of the band Semi Precious Weapons. The group named themselves DNCE after a song they wrote about being too drunk to spell "dance". The band signed with Republic Records and released their debut single, "Cake by the Ocean," on September 18, 2015. The song became a major international hit, peaking at number nine on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Their debut extended play, "Swaay," was released on October 23, 2015.

Debut Album and Hiatus

Following the success of their EP, DNCE released their self-titled debut studio album on November 18, 2016. The album featured the single "Toothbrush," which reached number 44 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band toured extensively and gained further recognition. In June 2018, they released their second EP, "People to People," which showcased a more mature sound. Soon after, the band went on an indefinite hiatus as Joe Jonas reunited with the Jonas Brothers.

Reunion and Second Hiatus

In February 2022, DNCE announced their return as a trio, without Cole Whittle who was pursuing a solo career. They released the single "Dancing Feet" in collaboration with DJ Kygo. This was followed by the singles "Move" and "Got Me Good" in the same year. The band went on a second hiatus in 2024.

Musical Style

DNCE is known for their upbeat and catchy music that combines elements of rock and funk with pop sensibilities. Their sound is characterized by Jonas's distinctive vocals, funky basslines, and danceable rhythms. Their lyrics often revolve around themes of fun, partying, and relationships.
