Biography
Demetria Devonne Lovato was born on August 20, 1992, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and raised in Dallas, Texas. Their career began at the age of seven, with their first role as Angela on the children's television series Barney & Friends. Lovato was homeschooled after experiencing bullying at school.
Rise to Fame and Acting Career
Lovato's breakthrough came in 2008 when they starred as Mitchie Torres in the Disney Channel movie Camp Rock. The film's success launched their acting and music careers. The soundtrack featured the hit single "This Is Me," a duet with Joe Jonas, which became a top-ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Following Camp Rock, Lovato starred in the sequel, Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam (2010), and the movie Princess Protection Program (2009) alongside Selena Gomez. They also had their own Disney Channel series, Sonny with a Chance, from 2009 to 2011. Lovato has also appeared in other television shows, including a recurring role on Glee (2013–2014) and serving as a judge on The X Factor USA (2012–2013).
Music Career
Concurrently with their acting career, Lovato launched a successful music career. They have released eight studio albums to date.
Debut and Early Success
After signing with Hollywood Records, Lovato released their debut pop-rock album, Don't Forget, in 2008, which debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart. Their second album, Here We Go Again (2009), debuted at number one. The third album, Unbroken (2011), featured the powerful ballad "Skyscraper," which became a top-ten single.
Mature Sound and Continued Success
Lovato's subsequent albums saw them exploring a more mature pop and R&B sound. Their self-titled fourth album, Demi (2013), included the international hit "Heart Attack". The fifth album, Confident (2015), earned a Grammy Award nomination, and the sixth, Tell Me You Love Me (2017), featured the highest-charting single of their career in the U.S., "Sorry Not Sorry". After a hiatus, they released Dancing with the Devil... the Art of Starting Over (2021) and the rock-influenced Holy Fvck (2022).
Personal Life and Advocacy
Throughout their career, Lovato has been open about their struggles with addiction, eating disorders, and mental health. They were diagnosed with bipolar disorder during treatment and have since become a vocal advocate for mental health awareness. Lovato has used their platform to speak out on these issues, launching initiatives like the Lovato Treatment Scholarship Program and partnering with mental health organizations. In 2021, Lovato came out as non-binary.
