City Girls

Biography

City Girls is an American hip hop duo from Miami, Florida, consisting of Yung Miami (Caresha Romeka Brownlee, born February 11, 1994) and JT (Jatavia Shakara Johnson, born December 3, 1992). The group's name is derived from the fact that the members are from Opa-locka and Liberty City, two of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Miami. Before rapping, Yung Miami was an Instagram influencer who promoted her own fashion line.

Career Beginnings and Breakthrough

The duo's career began in 2017 when they recorded their first track, "Fuck Dat Nigga," a diss track aimed at their ex-boyfriends. The song, which sampled Khia's "My Neck, My Back (Lick It)," quickly gained traction online and in clubs. This early success led to them signing with Quality Control Music. They gained mainstream recognition after an uncredited feature on Drake's 2018 number-one single, "In My Feelings."

Shortly after the release of their first song, JT was arrested for aggravated identity theft and sentenced to 24 months in federal prison. During JT's incarceration, Yung Miami continued to promote the group's music. In May 2018, they released their debut mixtape, Period.

Studio Albums and Mainstream Success

City Girls released their debut studio album, Girl Code, in November 2018. The album featured guest appearances from Cardi B, Lil Baby, and Jacquees and included the hit singles "Twerk" and "Act Up," which both became platinum-certified hits. Their second album, City on Lock, was released in 2020 and featured artists such as Doja Cat, Lil Durk, and Yo Gotti. The lead single, "Jobs," was released just hours before the album.

Their third studio album, RAW, was released in October 2023. Following its release, the duo announced they would be taking a hiatus to focus on their solo careers.

Solo Endeavors

Both members have pursued solo projects. JT has appeared on tracks with Summer Walker and Nicki Minaj and has released solo singles. Yung Miami has also released her own music and hosts the popular podcast "Caresha Please."
