Biography

Christopher Maurice Brown, born on May 5, 1989, in Tappahannock, Virginia, is an American singer, songwriter, dancer, and actor. From a young age, he showed a passion for music and taught himself to sing and dance, citing Michael Jackson as a major inspiration. At age 13, he was discovered by a local production team, which led to him signing a record deal with Jive Records in 2004. In 2005, Brown moved to New York to pursue his music career, leaving high school before graduating.

Music Career

Chris Brown's self-titled debut album was released in November 2005 and was a commercial success, debuting at number two on the Billboard 200 chart. The album's lead single, "Run It!", reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, making him the first male artist since 1995 to have his debut single top the chart. The album, which went on to be certified triple platinum, also included other hit singles like "Yo (Excuse Me Miss)" and "Say Goodbye". His debut album earned him two Grammy nominations, including for Best New Artist.

His second album, Exclusive, was released in 2007 and achieved even greater success, eventually being certified quadruple platinum in the U.S. It featured the number-one single "Kiss Kiss" and the popular tracks "With You" and "Forever". Brown's fourth studio album, F.A.M.E. (2011), became his first to top the Billboard 200 and earned him a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. He has since released a succession of albums that have consistently debuted in the top 10 of the Billboard 200, including Fortune (2012), X (2014), Royalty (2015), Heartbreak on a Full Moon (2017), and Indigo (2019). His eleventh studio album, 11:11, released in 2023, won a Grammy for Best R&B Album in 2025.

He holds the record for the most RIAA multi-platinum singles for any male singer. Billboard named him the third most successful artist of the 2010s in the R&B and hip-hop genre.

Acting Career

In addition to his music career, Brown has also pursued acting. He made his feature film debut in the 2007 movie Stomp the Yard. In the same year, he had a guest role on the television series The O.C. and a more significant role in the film This Christmas. His other film credits include Takers (2010), Think Like a Man (2012), and Battle of the Year (2013).

Personal Life and Controversies

Brown's career has been marked by significant controversy. In 2009, he pleaded guilty to felony assault of his then-girlfriend, singer Rihanna. He was sentenced to five years of probation and community service. This incident and subsequent legal issues have been highly publicized. Brown has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. He is a father to three children.
