Calvin Harris
Biography
Adam Richard Wiles, known professionally as Calvin Harris, was born on January 17, 1984, in Dumfries, Scotland. He developed an interest in electronic music during his teenage years and began creating demos in his bedroom. To fund his passion for music production, he took on jobs at supermarkets and a local fish processing factory to purchase DJ equipment. In 2002, under the name "Stouffer," he released two early tracks, "Da Bongos" and "Brighter Days." A move to London to immerse himself in the music scene proved challenging, leading him to return to Dumfries, where he started sharing his music on Myspace. This online presence eventually led to his discovery and the beginning of his professional career.
Early Career and Breakthrough
Harris signed contracts with Sony BMG and EMI in 2006 after his music gained traction on MySpace. His debut album, "I Created Disco," was released in June 2007. This album featured a retro-inspired, electropop sound and included the top-ten UK singles "Acceptable in the 80s" and "The Girls." The album itself was written, produced, and performed entirely by Harris in his home studio. It achieved a gold certification in the UK. Following his debut, he collaborated with Australian pop star Kylie Minogue on two tracks for her 2007 album "X."
Rise to International Fame
His second studio album, "Ready for the Weekend" (2009), debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart. It featured his first UK number-one single, "I'm Not Alone." This album continued his success and solidified his presence in the electronic music scene. In 2012, Harris achieved global recognition with his third album, "18 Months." This album marked a shift in his approach, as he stepped back from vocals to focus on production and featured a wide array of guest artists. It spawned a record-breaking eight top-ten singles in the UK, including the international hit "We Found Love" with Rihanna, which won a Grammy for Best Short Form Music Video. Another single from the album, "Sweet Nothing" featuring Florence Welch, also reached number one in the UK and became his first top-ten hit in the US.
Continued Success and Evolving Sound
Harris's fourth album, "Motion" (2014), continued his streak of commercial success, debuting at number two in the UK and number five in the US. It included popular singles like "Summer," "Blame" featuring John Newman, and "Outside" featuring Ellie Goulding. In 2017, he released his fifth album, "Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1," which showcased a departure from his signature EDM sound towards a more funk and disco-inspired style. The album was well-received and featured a star-studded lineup of collaborators, including Frank Ocean, Migos, and Pharrell Williams. A sequel, "Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2," followed in 2022, continuing the funk-infused sound with another impressive list of guest artists.
Awards and Recognition
Throughout his career, Calvin Harris has received numerous awards and accolades. He has won multiple Brit Awards, including British Producer of the Year, and a Grammy Award. For six consecutive years, from 2013 to 2018, Forbes listed him as the world's highest-paid DJ. He also holds the record for the most top-ten singles from one album in the UK, surpassing Michael Jackson.
