Biography
Garrett Clark Borns (born January 7, 1992), known by his stage name BØRNS, is an American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. He is known for his unique blend of indie pop, glam rock, and electronic music. Born in Muskegon and raised in Grand Haven, Michigan, BØRNS was involved in various forms of art from a young age. At ten years old, he performed as a professional magician. He also received a scholarship to the Kendall College of Art and Design for his visual arts.
Early Career and Breakthrough
BØRNS released his debut EP, "A Dream Between," in 2012. After relocating to Los Angeles, he co-wrote the song "10,000 Emerald Pools" which led to his signing with Interscope Records. This was followed by the release of his major-label debut EP, "Candy," in 2014. The EP included the hit single "Electric Love," which gained significant attention and has been certified platinum. His debut full-length album, "Dopamine," was released in 2015 and peaked at number 24 on the US Billboard 200 chart.
Musical Style and Influences
BØRNS' music is often described as dreamy and psychedelic, with a falsetto-driven vocal style. His androgynous vocals and appearance have been noted as a distinctive part of his artistic identity. He draws inspiration from a wide range of artists, including David Bowie, Prince, The Zombies, and The Beach Boys. His sound often incorporates elements of 1980s synthpop while maintaining a contemporary feel with full-bodied instrumentation and vocal harmonies.
Later Work and Collaborations
His second studio album, "Blue Madonna," was released in 2018. The album features a collaboration with Lana Del Rey on the track "God Save Our Young Blood." He has toured with notable artists such as Halsey, Charli XCX, and Bleachers, and has performed at major festivals including Coachella and Lollapalooza. After a hiatus, BØRNS returned with the EP "Suddenly" in July 2023 and the EP "Honeybee" released in January 2025.
