Matthew Tyler Musto (born November 27, 1990), known professionally as blackbear, is an American musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer. He was born in Daytona Beach, Florida, and his interest in music began in fourth grade, influenced by bands like Blink-182 and Rancid. In high school, he was the singer for the rock band Polaroid. After leaving the band, he began a solo career, initially performing under his real name, Mat Musto, and moved to Atlanta to work with Ne-Yo.

Career Beginnings and Breakthrough

In 2011, Musto adopted the moniker blackbear. A significant early success came in 2012 when he co-wrote Justin Bieber's hit song "Boyfriend," which peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. This achievement brought him considerable attention and financial security. He released his debut EP, "Foreplay," and his first mixtape, "Sex," in 2012. His 2015 full-length debut album, "Deadroses," featured the lead single "Idfc," which gained immense popularity on streaming platforms and charted on Billboard's R&B charts for over a year.
