Biography

Bastille is an English indie pop band that formed in London in 2010. The band originated as a solo project by singer-songwriter Dan Smith, who later decided to form a band. The lineup was completed by Chris 'Woody' Wood on drums, Will Farquarson on guitar and bass, and Kyle Simmons on keyboards. The band's name is derived from Bastille Day, the French National Day, which is celebrated on 14 July, the same day as Dan Smith's birthday.

Career Beginnings and Breakthrough with Bad Blood

Bastille's career began to gain traction after they released a debut 7" single, "Flaws"/"Icarus," in July 2011. This was followed by the self-released "Laura Palmer EP" later that year. In late 2011, the band signed with Virgin Records. Their debut studio album, "Bad Blood," was released in March 2013 and entered the UK Albums Chart at number one. The album's single, "Pompeii," became a massive international hit, peaking at number two in the UK and number five in the US. The success of "Bad Blood" led to a BRIT Award for Best Breakthrough Act in 2014 and a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist in 2015.

Studio Albums

Wild World (2016)

The band's second album, "Wild World," was released in September 2016. It expanded on their sound, incorporating elements of R&B, dance, and rock, with more overtly political songwriting. The album was co-produced by Mark Crew and featured the lead single "Good Grief." Like its predecessor, "Wild World" debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart.

Doom Days (2019)

In June 2019, Bastille released their third album, "Doom Days." This album is described as a concept album, documenting a night out. It was influenced by gospel and house music and took a more confessional approach in its songwriting. The album peaked at number four in the UK and number five in the US.

Give Me The Future (2022)

Bastille's fourth studio album, "Give Me the Future," was released in February 2022. The album explores themes of technology and the future, with a sound that leans more into electronic music. It became the band's third UK number one album. An extended version of the album, "Give Me the Future + Dreams of the Past," was released later in 2022, featuring new songs and collaborations.
