Alice Merton
Biography
Alice Florence Clarissa Merton, born on September 13, 1993, in Frankfurt, Germany, is a German-Canadian singer-songwriter. Her early life was characterized by frequent moves due to her father's job as a mining consultant. After being born in Germany, she lived in Connecticut, USA, and then Oakville, Ontario, Canada, where she began classical piano and voice training. At the age of 13, her family relocated to Munich, Germany. This nomadic upbringing would later inspire her hit song "No Roots." Merton graduated with a degree in composition and songwriting from the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg in Mannheim.
Career Beginnings and Breakthrough
Merton's career gained significant momentum in 2016. After facing rejection from several record labels, she and her manager, Paul Grauwinkel, founded their own label, Paper Plane Records International. At the end of 2016, she released her debut single, "No Roots." The song, inspired by her feeling of not having a single place to call home, quickly became a commercial success. It topped charts in multiple countries and reached number one on the US alternative radio charts. In 2017, she released her debut EP, also titled "No Roots."
Debut Album "Mint"
On January 18, 2019, Merton released her debut album, "Mint." The album featured the successful singles "No Roots" and "Lash Out," as well as new tracks like "Why So Serious" and "Funny Business." The album was released on her own label in conjunction with Mom + Pop Music in the United States and Canada. "Mint" received positive attention and showcased her unique pop-rock sound. Later in 2019, a deluxe version titled "Mint +4" was released, featuring four additional songs.
Subsequent Work
Following the success of her debut album, Merton became a coach on the ninth series of *The Voice of Germany* in 2019. She continued to release new music, with her second studio album, "S.I.D.E.S.," released in 2022. This album was preceded by singles such as "Vertigo," "Hero," and "Island." "S.I.D.E.S." explores a range of personal themes against a backdrop of indie pop and alternative rock sounds.
