Biography

Ricardo Valdez Valentine Jr., known professionally as 6LACK, is an American singer, songwriter, and rapper. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland on June 24, 1992, and moved to Atlanta, Georgia, with his parents in 1997. His stage name, pronounced "black," is a reference to his upbringing in Zone 6 of East Atlanta. 6LACK's first experience with music was at his father's studio at the age of four, and he became known for battle rapping in middle school. His musical influences include Sade, T-Pain, The-Dream, and Usher.

Career Beginnings and Breakthrough

In 2011, 6LACK signed a record deal with Flo Rida's International Music Group, which led him to drop out of Valdosta State University. However, he faced creative and financial struggles for five years under this deal. After leaving the label, he joined the creative collective LVRN (Love Renaissance) and signed with Interscope Records. This move marked a turning point in his career. In November 2016, he released his debut studio album, Free 6lack. The album's lead single, "Prblms," became a breakout hit, reaching the Billboard Hot 100 and achieving platinum status. The album itself peaked at number 34 on the Billboard 200 and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album.

East Atlanta Love Letter

6LACK released his second album, East Atlanta Love Letter, in September 2018. It peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 chart. The album featured collaborations with artists like J. Cole, Future, and Khalid. That same year, he also collaborated with Khalid and Ty Dolla $ign on the hit single "OTW" and was featured on Normani's award-winning single "Waves."

Later Releases and Collaborations

In June 2020, 6LACK released the EP 6pc Hot. He also collaborated with Gorillaz and Elton John on the track "The Pink Phantom" that year. In 2021, his collaboration with Lil Tjay, "Calling My Phone," became his highest-charting single, peaking at number three on the Billboard Hot 100. His third studio album, Since I Have a Lover, was released in March 2023 and received a Grammy nomination for Best Progressive R&B Album.
