4 Non Blondes

Biography

4 Non Blondes was an American alternative rock band from San Francisco, formed in 1989. The initial lineup consisted of lead vocalist and guitarist Linda Perry, bassist Christa Hillhouse, guitarist Shaunna Hall, and drummer Wanda Day. The group gained a significant following in the San Francisco bar scene, particularly in lesbian bars. They signed with Interscope Records in 1991.

Bigger, Better, Faster, More!

Before the release of their debut album, the band underwent lineup changes. Drummer Wanda Day was replaced by Dawn Richardson, and guitarist Shaunna Hall was replaced by Roger Rocha. Their only studio album, "Bigger, Better, Faster, More!", was released on October 13, 1992. The album's second single, "What's Up?", became a massive international hit in 1993, charting at number one in several countries. The album sold over 1.5 million copies in the United States and six million copies worldwide. Dominated by Perry's powerful vocals, the album was a mix of alternative rock, funk, and blues.

Disbandment and Aftermath

Despite their success, internal tensions grew within the band. Lead singer Linda Perry was unhappy with the polished, pop sound of their music and felt creatively constrained. In 1994, during the recording sessions for their second album, Perry left the group to pursue a solo career, which led to the band's dissolution. Original drummer Wanda Day passed away in 1997.

Post-4 Non Blondes

After leaving the band, Linda Perry embarked on a successful solo career and became a highly sought-after songwriter and producer for a wide range of prominent artists, including P!nk, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, Alicia Keys, and Adele. She was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2015. The band reunited for a one-off performance at a fundraiser in Los Angeles in 2014.
