Biography
311 (pronounced "three-eleven") is an American rock band from Omaha, Nebraska. The band was formed in 1988 by singer/guitarist Nick Hexum, bassist Aaron "P-Nut" Wills, and drummer Chad Sexton. In 1991, Tim Mahoney joined as lead guitarist, and in 1992, Doug "SA" Martinez was added as a vocalist and turntablist, completing the lineup that has remained unchanged. The band's name originates from the Omaha Police code for indecent exposure.

311's music is known for its distinctive blend of rock, reggae, hip hop, and funk. This genre-bending sound has been described as alternative rock, reggae rock, rap rock, and funk metal. They achieved mainstream success with their 1995 self-titled album, often called "The Blue Album." This album went triple-platinum and featured the hit singles "Down" and "All Mixed Up." "Down" reached number one on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart in 1996.
Subsequent Success
The band continued their success with subsequent albums. "Transistor" (1997) was certified platinum, while "Soundsystem" (1999) and "From Chaos" (2001) were certified gold. Their 2004 compilation album, "Greatest Hits '93–'03," also achieved platinum status. Several of their albums have debuted in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart, including "Evolver" (2003), "Don't Tread on Me" (2005), and "Uplifter" (2009), which reached number three. Their single "Love Song," a cover of The Cure, became their second number-one single on the Alternative Songs chart.

311 is renowned for their energetic and celebratory live shows, which have helped them cultivate a large and dedicated grassroots following. The band has a tradition of celebrating "311 Day" every other year on March 11th with a special concert event that draws thousands of fans from around the world.
