Vundabar
Biography
Vundabar is an American indie rock band from Boston, Massachusetts. The group consists of Brandon Hagen on vocals and guitar, Drew McDonald on drums, and Zack Abramo on bass. Before forming Vundabar, Hagen and McDonald were in a band called No Nada from approximately 2009 to 2012. Vundabar was formed in 2012, initially with a rotating lineup of bassists before Zack Abramo joined permanently.
Musical Style
Vundabar's sound is described as indie rock with influences of post-punk, jangle pop, and surf rock. AllMusic characterizes their style as "jangly, fuzzed-out math- and surf-tinged indie rock shot through with plenty of post-punk spirit". The band has cited artists like Dick Dale and The Osees as influences. Their music often features a quiet/loud dynamic and has been compared to the Pixies.
Career
The band released their debut album, "Antics," in 2013. They followed this with "Gawk" in 2015, which had a grittier, more post-punk sound. Their third album, "Smell Smoke," was released in 2018. In 2021, their song "Alien Blues" from the album "Gawk" went viral on TikTok, significantly increasing their visibility. For their fourth album, "Either Light" (2020), the band incorporated more synthesizers and piano into their songwriting process.
