Biography

Tijs Michiel Verwest, known professionally as Tiësto, was born in Breda, Netherlands, on January 17, 1969. His passion for music began at the age of 12, and by 14, he was DJing professionally at school parties. Between 1985 and 1994, he held residencies at several clubs in the Netherlands, developing his unique style.

Early Career and Rise to Fame

In the mid-1990s, Tiësto began producing tracks, initially in the hardcore and gabber genres under aliases like Da Joker and DJ Limited. He was discovered by the general manager of Basic Beat Recordings, which led to the release of his "Forbidden Paradise" mix series. In 1997, he and Arny Bink co-founded the label Black Hole Recordings, which became a platform for his own work and other trance artists. Through this label, he released the "Magik" and "In Search of Sunrise" compilation series. His collaboration with Ferry Corsten as Gouryella from 1998 to 2000 and his 2000 remix of Delerium's "Silence" featuring Sarah McLachlan brought him to a wider mainstream audience.

Debut Album and Global Recognition

Tiësto's debut solo album, "In My Memory," was released in 2001 and featured several major hits, including "Lethal Industry" and "Flight 643," which launched his international career. From 2002 to 2004, he was voted the "World's No. 1 DJ" by DJ Magazine for three consecutive years. A pivotal moment in his career came in 2004 when he became the first DJ to perform at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Athens. His performance featured a mix of his original tracks and new compositions created for the event. Following the Olympics, he released his second studio album, "Just Be."

Musical Evolution and Mainstream Success

In 2007, Tiësto launched his long-running radio show, "Tiësto's Club Life," and released his third studio album, "Elements of Life," which received a Grammy nomination. His fourth album, "Kaleidoscope" (2009), marked a significant shift in his musical style, moving from trance towards a more diverse electronic sound with collaborations with artists like Nelly Furtado and Calvin Harris. This evolution continued with subsequent albums like "A Town Called Paradise" (2014) and "Drive" (2023), which featured numerous chart-topping singles and solidified his status as a crossover artist.

Recent Years and Las Vegas Residency

In recent years, Tiësto has continued to be a dominant force in the electronic music scene. He has held a high-profile residency in Las Vegas since 2024, performing at multiple iconic venues. He continues to release music and tour globally, and in 2017, was honored with the key to the city of Las Vegas, with January 14th being declared "Tiësto Day" in Clark County, Nevada. His influence is widely recognized, with many sources referring to him as the "Godfather of EDM".
