Biography
Natalie Jane Imbruglia is an Australian-British singer, songwriter, and actress. She was born on February 4, 1975, in Sydney, Australia. Imbruglia grew up on the Central Coast of New South Wales and began her career in the entertainment industry at a young age, appearing in commercials for Coca-Cola and Twisties. At 16, she left school to pursue acting and landed the role of Beth Brennan on the popular Australian soap opera Neighbours. After two years on the show, she moved to London in 1994 to launch a music career.
Music Career
Imbruglia's music career took off with the release of her debut single, a cover of Ednaswap's "Torn," in 1997. The song became a global smash hit, reaching number two on the UK Singles Chart and topping airplay charts worldwide. It sold over a million copies in the UK alone. Her debut album, Left of the Middle, was released in 1997 and was also a commercial success, selling over seven million copies worldwide and achieving multi-platinum status in the UK, US, and Australia. The album earned her several awards, including two Brit Awards and three Grammy nominations.
Subsequent Albums
Imbruglia has released several albums since her debut. White Lilies Island was released in 2001, followed by Counting Down the Days in 2005, which became her first album to reach number one on the UK album charts. The lead single from this album, "Shiver," also performed well, becoming her longest-charting single in the UK since "Torn." Her other studio albums include Come to Life (2009), Male (2015), and Firebird (2021). She also released a greatest hits compilation, Glorious: The Singles 97–07, in 2007.
Acting Career
In addition to her music career, Imbruglia has continued to act. She made her film debut in the 2003 spy comedy Johnny English alongside Rowan Atkinson. She has also appeared in the Australian indie film Closed for Winter (2009) and other movies such as Underdogs and Among Ravens. In 2014, she made her stage debut in a UK production of Things We Do For Love. She has also served as a judge on the Australian version of The X Factor.
Personal Life
Natalie Imbruglia has had a number of high-profile relationships. She was married to Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns from 2003 to 2008. She has also been linked to actor David Schwimmer. In 2019, Imbruglia announced the birth of her son, who was conceived via IVF. She became a naturalised British citizen in 2013.
