Biography
Miguel Jontel Pimentel, born on October 23, 1985, is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer known for his progressive take on R&B. Raised in San Pedro, California, he was introduced to a wide range of music from a young age, including R&B, funk, hip hop, jazz, and classic rock, by his parents. His parents divorced when he was eight years old. Miguel began pursuing a music career at the age of thirteen.
Career Beginnings
Miguel signed a production deal with Drop Squad in 2000. In 2004, he signed with the independent label Black Ice Records and recorded his debut album, "Young & Free," which was ultimately shelved. Disappointed with the creative direction, he left the label. He then signed with Jive Records in 2007.
Musical Career
Miguel released his debut studio album, "All I Want Is You," in November 2010. Although initially underpromoted, the album became a sleeper hit, with the title track featuring J. Cole and the single "Sure Thing" gaining significant traction. "Sure Thing" experienced a resurgence in popularity in 2023, becoming his most commercially successful single.
Kaleidoscope Dream
After Jive Records was dissolved, Miguel moved to RCA Records and released his second album, "Kaleidoscope Dream," in 2012. The album was a critical and commercial success, debuting at number three on the Billboard 200 chart. The lead single, "Adorn," won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Song in 2013. The album also included the popular track "How Many Drinks?".
Wildheart and War & Leisure
His third album, "Wildheart," was released in 2015, showcasing a more rock-influenced sound with psychedelic and new wave elements. It debuted at number two on the Billboard 200. The album features collaborations with Lenny Kravitz and Kurupt. In 2017, Miguel released his fourth album, "War & Leisure," which included the hit single "Sky Walker" featuring Travis Scott. This album also featured collaborations with Rick Ross, J. Cole, and Kali Uchis.

Miguel's music is known for blending R&B, funk, hip hop, rock, and electronic styles. He has been compared to artists like Prince and Babyface. His vocal style is influenced by classic rock bands such as The Beatles, Queen, and The Police.
Collaborations and Other Ventures
Throughout his career, Miguel has collaborated with numerous artists, including Mariah Carey on the platinum single "#Beautiful," Wale on "Lotus Flower Bomb," and A$AP Rocky. He also contributed to the soundtrack of the film "Fifty Shades Darker" with a cover of Beyoncé's "Crazy in Love." In 2019, he released a Spanish-language EP titled "Te Lo Dije."
