Biography
(G)I-DLE is a South Korean girl group formed by Cube Entertainment that officially debuted on May 2, 2018. The group currently consists of five members: Miyeon, Minnie, Soyeon, Yuqi, and Shuhua. Originally a six-member group, Soojin departed in August 2021. The group is known for being heavily involved in their music's creation, with leader Soyeon writing and producing a significant portion of their discography.
Career Beginnings and Breakthrough
Prior to their debut, some members had gained public exposure. Soyeon was a contestant on the reality shows "Produce 101" and "Unpretty Rapstar 3". Miyeon was a former trainee at YG Entertainment. (G)I-DLE debuted with the mini-album "I Am" and its title track "Latata". The song was an immediate success, earning them their first music show win just 20 days after their debut and multiple rookie awards. They were quickly recognized as "monster rookies" for their achievements.
Following their debut, the group released a series of successful singles and EPs including "Hann (Alone)", "Senorita", and "Uh-Oh". Their participation in the Mnet competition show "Queendom" in 2019 further boosted their popularity, particularly with their powerful performance of "Lion".
Musical Style and Rise to Prominence
(G)I-DLE is recognized for their musical versatility, exploring genres like moombahton, Latin pop, hip hop, and EDM. They are praised for tackling diverse concepts and for their self-produced musical identity, which sets them apart. A major turning point in their career came with the release of their first studio album "I Never Die" in 2022, and its lead single "Tomboy". The song was a massive commercial success, achieving a "perfect all-kill" on South Korean music charts. They repeated this success later that year with "Nxde", becoming the only artist to achieve two perfect all-kills in 2022.
