Biography

Gianna Brielle "Gigi" Perez, born on February 4, 2000, in Hackensack, New Jersey, is an American singer-songwriter. Raised in West Palm Beach, Florida, by her Cuban immigrant parents, she began writing songs at the age of fifteen. Perez identifies as a lesbian and has spoken about how Hayley Kiyoko's song "Girls Like Girls" helped her embrace her sexuality. Her early musical endeavors included being part of the band Wendy Lane during high school. She briefly attended Berklee College of Music but left due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Career Beginnings and Viral Success

Perez first gained significant attention in early 2021 after her songs "Celene" and "Sometimes (Backwood)" went viral on TikTok. "Celene" was a tribute to her older sister, who passed away in 2020. This viral success led to a record deal with Interscope Records. With Interscope, she released several singles, including "The Man" in June 2022. She has served as a supporting act for artists like Coldplay, Noah Cyrus, and d4vd.

'How to Catch a Falling Knife' EP

In April 2023, Perez released her debut EP, "How to Catch a Falling Knife," through Interscope Records. The eight-song project was composed three years prior and explores themes of grief and heartbreak, stemming from the loss of her sister and a subsequent breakup. The title is a stock market metaphor, representing the emotional risks she took. The EP includes tracks like "Kill for You," "Figurines," and "Sally."

Independent Breakthrough and 'Sailor Song'

After parting ways with Interscope Records, Perez independently released the single "Normalcy" in March 2024. This was followed by her breakout hit, "Sailor Song," in July 2024. The tender, queer ballad went viral on TikTok and achieved significant chart success, peaking at number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping the charts in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Latvia. The song's success led to her signing with Island Records in September 2024.

Debut Album: 'At the Beach, in Every Life'

Perez released her debut studio album, "At the Beach, in Every Life," on April 25, 2025, via Island Records. The album features the hit single "Sailor Song" and continues to showcase her intimate and emotionally raw songwriting style that blends indie folk and pop.
