Biography

Asaf Avidan is an Israeli singer-songwriter known for his unique, androgynous vocal style, which is often compared to legendary artists like Janis Joplin and Nina Simone. Born in Jerusalem in 1980 to diplomat parents, he spent parts of his childhood in Jamaica and New York. Before his music career, Avidan studied animation at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem and worked as an animator. A painful breakup in 2006 became the catalyst for his musical journey, leading him to write the songs for his debut EP, "Now That You're Leaving" (2006).

Asaf Avidan & The Mojos

In late 2006, Avidan formed the folk-rock band Asaf Avidan & The Mojos. The band consisted of Asaf Avidan on vocals and guitar, Ran Nir on bass, Yoni "Johnny Snow" Sheleg on drums, Roi Peled on guitar, and Hadas Kleinman on cello. They independently released their debut album, "The Reckoning," in 2008, which achieved gold certification in Israel. The band went on to release two more albums, "Poor Boy / Lucky Man" (2009) and "Through the Gale" (2010), gaining significant popularity in their home country and touring internationally. The group disbanded in 2011 as Avidan decided to pursue a solo career.

International Breakthrough: "One Day / Reckoning Song"

A significant turning point in Avidan's career came in 2012 when German DJ Wankelmut remixed the band's "Reckoning Song." The remix, titled "One Day / Reckoning Song (Wankelmut Rmx)," became a massive international hit, topping charts across Europe in countries like Germany, Austria, Belgium, Italy, and Switzerland. This success brought Avidan widespread international recognition far beyond his previous accomplishments.

Solo Career

Following the Mojos' disbandment, Avidan embarked on a successful solo career. His first solo studio album, "Different Pulses," was released in 2012 and achieved platinum status in France. He has since released several other solo albums, including "Gold Shadow" (2015), "The Study on Falling" (2017), and "Anagnorisis" (2020). His music blends elements of folk, rock, and blues, characterized by his emotionally charged lyrics and powerful vocal performances. Avidan is also known for his captivating live shows, where he often performs solo, showcasing his skills as a multi-instrumentalist.
