Biography

Alexander Giannascoli, known professionally as Alex G, is an American musician, singer-songwriter, and producer born on February 3, 1993, in Havertown, Pennsylvania. He began his musical journey at a young age, learning to play the guitar his brother gave him at age 11 and recording music. While in high school, he created two albums that he shared with friends.

Career Beginnings and Breakthrough

Alex G started his career by self-releasing a series of albums, EPs, and singles on Bandcamp between 2010 and 2012. This DIY approach and his prolific output helped him gain a cult following online, with The Fader dubbing him "the internet's secret best songwriter." His early work was characterized by a lo-fi, bedroom pop aesthetic. His 2014 album, DSU, released on Orchid Tapes, was his label debut and garnered critical acclaim, leading to wider recognition and tours across North America and Europe. The success of DSU led to the reissue of his earlier popular albums, Rules and Trick (both 2012), by the label Lucky Number.

Musical Style and Influences

Alex G's music is often categorized as indie rock with a lo-fi aesthetic, drawing frequent comparisons to artists like Elliott Smith, Built to Spill, and Modest Mouse. He is known for his experimental approach to production, often utilizing vocal manipulation and unconventional song structures. Over the years, his style has evolved, incorporating elements of folk, noise rock, and electronic music.
