Biography

Sir George Ivan "Van" Morrison, born on August 31, 1945, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, is a highly influential singer-songwriter whose career has spanned over six decades. His father's extensive record collection of blues, country, and gospel music, featuring artists like Muddy Waters and Mahalia Jackson, profoundly shaped his musical tastes from a young age. Morrison began his professional career as a teenager, playing various instruments in several bands. By age 13, he was a traveling musician, and at 17, he toured Europe with the band The Monarchs.

Them

In 1964, Morrison formed the rhythm and blues band Them, which quickly gained notoriety in the Belfast music scene. The band's raw energy and Morrison's compelling stage presence led them to produce timeless hits, including the garage rock anthem "Gloria". Other notable songs from this period include "Here Comes The Night" and "Mystic Eyes". Despite their success, the band experienced frequent lineup changes and eventually disbanded in 1966, prompting Morrison to embark on a solo career.

Solo Career

Morrison's solo career began in New York under the guidance of producer Bert Berns, resulting in the 1967 hit single "Brown Eyed Girl". Following Berns' death, Morrison signed with Warner Bros. and released the album "Astral Weeks" in 1968. Though not an initial commercial success, "Astral Weeks" is now critically acclaimed as a masterpiece, praised for its unique blend of folk, blues, jazz, and Celtic influences. His next album, "Moondance" (1970), marked his commercial breakthrough, establishing him as a major artist with its more structured and optimistic R&B and soul-infused sound. Throughout the 1970s, he released a series of celebrated albums, including "Tupelo Honey" (1971) and the live album "It's Too Late to Stop Now" (1974).

Musical Style and Later Work

Morrison's music is known for its blend of various genres, including soul, R&B, jazz, blues, and Celtic folk, often referred to as "Celtic soul". His lyrics frequently explore themes of spirituality, love, and nostalgia. In the 1980s, his work delved deeper into spiritual and mystical themes with albums like "No Guru, No Method, No Teacher". He has continued to be a prolific artist, releasing albums consistently through the decades. Morrison has received numerous awards, including six Grammy Awards, a Brit Award, and inductions into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2016, he was knighted for his services to the music industry and tourism in Northern Ireland.
