Biography

Tyler Gregory Okonma, born on March 6, 1991, in Hawthorne, California, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, and fashion designer known professionally as Tyler, The Creator. He was raised in Hawthorne and later moved to Ladera Heights. From a young age, Okonma was drawn to music, teaching himself to play the piano at 14 and creating imaginary album covers.

Odd Future

In 2007, Tyler, The Creator co-founded the alternative hip-hop collective Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (often shortened to Odd Future or OFWGKTA). He was the group's leader and a primary creative force. The collective, which included artists like Earl Sweatshirt, Frank Ocean, and Syd, gained a significant online following for their rebellious and controversial style. Odd Future released mixtapes and a studio album, "The OF Tape Vol. 2," and also had a sketch comedy show called "Loiter Squad" on Adult Swim.

Solo Music Career

Tyler's solo career began with the self-released mixtape "Bastard" in 2009. His debut studio album, "Goblin," was released in 2011 and brought him mainstream attention with the single and music video for "Yonkers." This was followed by "Wolf" in 2013, which showcased a move towards a more jazz and R&B-influenced sound. His 2015 album, "Cherry Bomb," continued this sonic exploration and featured prominent artists like Kanye West and Lil Wayne. A significant shift in his artistry came with the 2017 album "Flower Boy," which received widespread critical acclaim and a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album. His subsequent albums, "Igor" (2019) and "Call Me If You Get Lost" (2021), both debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and won Grammy Awards for Best Rap Album. His most recent album, "Chromakopia," was released in 2024.

Musical Style Evolution

Tyler's early music was characterized by its horrorcore influences, with gritty and aggressive lyrics. Over time, his sound has evolved to incorporate elements of jazz, soul, and R&B, becoming more melodic and personal. This transition became particularly evident from the album "Wolf" onwards and was fully realized in critically acclaimed projects like "Flower Boy" and "Igor." He is known for producing most of his own music.

Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival

Since 2012, Tyler has hosted the annual music festival Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival. The festival has featured a diverse lineup of popular artists over the years.

Directing and Television

Tyler directs his music videos under the pseudonym Wolf Haley. In addition to the Odd Future sketch show "Loiter Squad," he also created the animated series "The Jellies!".
