Biography

Thousand Foot Krutch (TFK) is a Canadian rock band formed in Peterborough, Ontario, in 1995. The band's core members are Trevor McNevan (vocals, guitar), Joel Bruyere (bass, backing vocals), and Steve Augustine (drums). Throughout their career, they have released ten studio albums, two live albums, and three remix albums.

Early Years and Formation (1995-2002)

Trevor McNevan started the band in his hometown with childhood friend Joel Bruyere and drummer Steve Augustine. McNevan's first band was called Oddball and they released one album, Shutterbug, in 1995. The name Thousand Foot Krutch was conceived by McNevan to symbolize the realization that one cannot rely solely on their own strength. The band's early sound was a fusion of nu-metal and rap-rock. After gaining local recognition, they released their debut album as Thousand Foot Krutch, That's What People Do, independently in 1997. Their first label release was Set It Off in 2000. During this period, Dave Smith was the lead guitarist, leaving McNevan as the only original member when he departed in 2002.

Mainstream Success and Musical Evolution (2003-2016)

Signing with Tooth & Nail Records, TFK released Phenomenon in 2003, which marked a shift towards a more mainstream rock sound, with less emphasis on rap. This album earned them their first Juno Award nominations. The 2005 album, The Art of Breaking, continued this heavier rock direction and was their first to enter the Billboard 200 chart. Their 2009 album, Welcome to the Masquerade, became their most successful to that point, reaching number 35 on the Billboard 200. The band went independent for their 2012 release, The End Is Where We Begin, which debuted at number 14 on the Billboard 200 and topped the hard rock and Christian charts. This was followed by Oxygen: Inhale (2014) and Exhale (2016), with the latter also reaching number 1 on the Billboard Hard Rock Albums Chart.

Musical Style

Thousand Foot Krutch's music has been categorized as Christian rock, nu-metal, hard rock, and alternative rock. Their sound has evolved from a rap-heavy nu-metal style in their early days to a more melodic hard rock sound, while still incorporating elements of rap and other genres. They are known for their high-energy live performances and lyrics that often touch on themes of faith, hope, and perseverance.

Hiatus and Return (2017-Present)

After the release of the live album Untraveled Roads in 2017, the band went on a hiatus. In 2023, Thousand Foot Krutch announced their return with a new project, The End Is Where We Begin: Reignited, which features re-recorded tracks from their 2012 album with guest artists. The core lineup of McNevan, Bruyere, and Augustine officially reunited in 2023.
