Biography

The Bangles are an American pop rock band that formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1981. The group's classic lineup consisted of Susanna Hoffs (vocals and rhythm guitar), sisters Vicki Peterson (lead guitar and vocals) and Debbi Peterson (drums and vocals), and Michael Steele (bass and vocals). They are known for being one of the most successful all-female bands in history.

Formation and Early Years

The band was formed when Susanna Hoffs joined forces with Vicki and Debbi Peterson. Originally calling themselves The Colours, then The Bangs, they became part of the Los Angeles Paisley Underground scene, which was influenced by 1960s rock. After a legal issue with another band named The Bangs, they changed their name to The Bangles. The initial lineup included Annette Zilinskas on bass, who left in 1983 and was replaced by Michael Steele, formerly of the Runaways.

Rise to Fame

The Bangles signed with Columbia Records in 1983 and released their debut album, "All Over the Place," in 1984. While critically acclaimed, the album did not achieve major commercial success. Their breakthrough came with their second album, 1986's "Different Light." This album featured the hit single "Manic Monday," written by Prince, which reached number two on the charts. The album also included the worldwide number one hit "Walk Like an Egyptian."

International Success and Breakup

The band's success continued with a cover of Simon & Garfunkel's "A Hazy Shade of Winter" for a movie soundtrack in 1987. Their third album, "Everything" (1988), featured the major international hit ballad "Eternal Flame," which became their biggest-selling single. Despite their worldwide success, internal tensions, particularly regarding media focus on Hoffs as the lead singer, led to the band's breakup in 1989.

Reunion and Later Career

The Bangles officially reformed in 1998 to record a song for the movie "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me." This led to a full reunion, and they released the album "Doll Revolution" in 2003. Michael Steele left the band in 2005. The remaining members, Hoffs, and the Peterson sisters, have continued to tour and record, releasing the album "Sweetheart of the Sun" in 2011. Original bassist Annette Zilinskas rejoined the band in 2018 for live performances.
