Modjo was a French house and nu-disco duo, formed in 1999, consisting of producer Romain Tranchart and vocalist Yann Destagnol (also known as Yann Destal). They are best known for their worldwide hit single, "Lady (Hear Me Tonight)".

Formation and Early Career

Romain Tranchart, born in Paris, had a diverse musical upbringing, living in Algeria, Mexico, and Brazil, where he was inspired by jazz and bossa nova. He later became influenced by house music artists like DJ Sneak and Daft Punk, and released a single under the name Funk Legacy in 1998. Yann Destagnol, also from Paris, was a multi-instrumentalist influenced by pop and rock acts like The Beatles and David Bowie, as well as R&B vocalists. The two met in 1998 and began collaborating, which led to the creation of Modjo.

Breakthrough Success

In 2000, Modjo released their debut single, "Lady (Hear Me Tonight)". The song, which samples "Soup for One" by Chic, became a global phenomenon, topping the charts in numerous countries. Following this massive success, they released their self-titled debut album, "Modjo," in 2001. The album featured other successful singles such as "Chillin'" and "No More Tears".
