Biography

Stanley Kirk Burrell, known professionally as MC Hammer, was born in Oakland, California, on March 30, 1962. Before his music career, he served in the U.S. Navy for three years. His early passion for music and dance was evident as he performed for crowds in the Oakland Coliseum parking lot, where he also worked as a batboy for the Oakland A's. It was there he earned the nickname "Hammer" for his resemblance to baseball player "Hammerin'" Hank Aaron.

Rise to Stardom

MC Hammer's career took off in the late 1980s. With financial help from two former A's players, he started his own record label, Bust It Productions, and released his first album, "Feel My Power," in 1986. This led to a contract with Capitol Records. His 1990 album, "Please Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em," became a global phenomenon, selling over 10 million copies and becoming the first hip-hop album to achieve diamond status. The album featured the iconic single "U Can't Touch This," which sampled Rick James' "Super Freak" and propelled Hammer to international fame. His energetic dance moves and signature "Hammer pants" became pop culture staples.

Career Highlights

Following the massive success of "Please Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em," he released "Too Legit to Quit" in 1991. The title track was a major hit, and the album sold over five million copies. He also released "Addams Groove," which was featured in the movie "The Addams Family." Throughout his career, Hammer won three Grammy Awards, including Best R&B Song and Best Rap Solo Performance for "U Can't Touch This". He has sold more than 50 million records worldwide.

Financial Troubles and Later Career

At the peak of his fame in 1991, Forbes estimated his earnings to be $33 million. However, lavish spending on a large entourage, luxury cars, and a custom-built mansion led to financial difficulties. By 1996, Hammer filed for bankruptcy with over $13 million in debt. After his financial downfall, Hammer reinvented himself. He became an ordained minister and has been involved in various business ventures, particularly in technology. He has invested in several tech startups, including Twitter, and has served as a consultant for companies like Salesforce. He continues to perform and tour, and has appeared in television shows and commercials.
