Måneskin

Biography

Måneskin is an Italian rock band that formed in Rome in 2016. The group consists of vocalist Damiano David, bassist Victoria De Angelis, guitarist Thomas Raggi, and drummer Ethan Torchio. The members have known each other since their middle and high school days. De Angelis and Raggi were the first to form the band, with David joining soon after. Torchio completed the lineup after being found through a "Musicians Wanted" ad on Facebook. The band's name, which means "moonlight" in Danish, was suggested by De Angelis, who is half Danish.

Early Career and X Factor

In their early days, Måneskin performed as buskers on the streets of Rome. Their career began to take off after they won a local music contest called Pulse, which encouraged them to start writing their own songs. In 2017, the band participated in the eleventh season of the Italian version of X Factor, where they finished in second place. This experience brought them national recognition and led to the release of their debut EP, "Chosen," in 2017.

Eurovision and International Breakthrough

Måneskin's international breakthrough came in 2021 when they won the Sanremo Music Festival with their song "Zitti e buoni". This victory earned them the right to represent Italy in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021, which they also won. Following their Eurovision win, "Zitti e buoni" and other tracks like "I Wanna Be Your Slave" and their cover of The Four Seasons' "Beggin'" charted across Europe and on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart. The band became the first Italian rock group to break into the top 10 of the UK Singles Chart.

Musical Style and Image

Måneskin's music is described as a mix of pop rock, alternative rock, glam rock, hard rock, and funk rock. Their style has evolved from a pop-rock sound on their first album to a harder rock sound on subsequent releases. The band is also known for their androgynous and glam rock-inspired fashion sense, often compared to 1970s rock icons. They have collaborated with fashion houses like Etro and Gucci.
