Biography
Madonna Louise Ciccone, born on August 16, 1958, in Bay City, Michigan, is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and businesswoman referred to as the "Queen of Pop". She moved to New York City in 1978 to pursue a career in modern dance. After performing in the music groups Breakfast Club and Emmy, she signed with Sire Records in 1982 and released her debut single "Everybody" the same year. Her debut album, "Madonna," was released in 1983.
Career Breakthrough
Madonna achieved global stardom with the release of her second album, "Like a Virgin," in 1984. The title track became her first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100. The album was the first by a female artist to sell over five million copies in the United States. The 1980s saw a string of hits for Madonna, including "Material Girl," "Crazy for You," "Into the Groove," and "Like a Prayer." Her third studio album, "True Blue" (1986), reached number one in 28 countries. By 1991, she had 21 Top 10 hits in the U.S. and had sold approximately 70 million albums worldwide.
Acting Career

Madonna was married to actor Sean Penn from 1985 to 1989 and to director Guy Ritchie from 2000 to 2008. She has six children: Lourdes, Rocco, David, Mercy, and twins Estere and Stella. David, Mercy, and the twins were adopted from Malawi.
