Biography

Malcolm James McCormick, known professionally as Mac Miller, was an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer born on January 19, 1992, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A self-taught musician, he could play piano, guitar, drums, and bass by the age of six. He began his rap career at 15, initially using the name Easy Mac.

Career Beginnings and Breakthrough

In 2010, at age 18, Miller signed with the independent label Rostrum Records. His breakout mixtape, "K.I.D.S." (2010), and "Best Day Ever" (2011) garnered significant attention. His debut studio album, "Blue Slide Park" (2011), made history by becoming the first independently distributed debut album to top the U.S. Billboard 200 chart since 1995.

Artistic Evolution

Miller's early music was often categorized as "frat rap," focusing on themes of partying and youth. However, he consciously evolved his style with subsequent projects. His second album, "Watching Movies with the Sound Off" (2013), showcased a more experimental and introspective approach, exploring complex lyrical themes. He continued this artistic growth with albums like "GO:OD AM" (2015) and "The Divine Feminine" (2016), which incorporated elements of R&B, jazz, and funk. Miller also produced music under the pseudonym Larry Fisherman.

Later Career and Posthumous Releases

In 2014, Miller signed a deal with Warner Bros. Records and founded his own record label imprint, REMember Music. His fifth studio album, "Swimming," was released in 2018 and earned him a posthumous Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap Album. Miller had been open about his struggles with substance abuse and mental health, themes often present in his music. He died on September 7, 2018, at the age of 26, from an accidental drug overdose. His first posthumous album, "Circles," was released in 2020 and was intended to be a companion to "Swimming".
